Exercise 2 of 2 · About 20 minutes

Sort the jobs

Finish with a start-list: the jobs AI could take first, the ones to sort out first, and the ones that stay human.

  1. List ten jobs. Start with the lines you drew on Untangle, or the ones the business does every week: the bookings, the quotes, chasing invoices, the office WhatsApp. One to a row.
  2. Fill in each row. Who owns it: the person who would notice first if it stopped. If nobody would, write “nobody”. Where it lives: a spreadsheet, the inbox, a WhatsApp group, someone’s head. Could AI touch it: ring yes or never. AI is good at the dull written jobs: drafting, sorting, summarising, chasing. Who checks it: the person who would read its work before it goes out.
  3. Sort them into the three boxes. Ringed never? It stays human. For the rest, ask three things. Does someone own it? Is it written down, and not only in someone’s head? Does someone check it? Yes to all three, and AI could take it first. Any no, and it goes under “Sort these out first”, with what’s missing written beside it.

AI could take these first

Someone owns it, it’s written down, and someone checks it.

Sort these out first

Write what’s missing: an owner, a written-down place, or someone to check it.

These stay human

You said never. That’s a decision too.

Ideally, the people who do the jobs answer these questions, not only you.

Then bring this sheet when you talk to Dave Ashenden at Subversive.
